Acne Q & A

What is acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States. Acne isn’t limited to your face. It can also affect your:

  • Neck
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Shoulders

Acne is common among teenagers and young adults. Although most acne isn’t a serious health problem, the condition can cause embarrassment and social and emotional distress.

Why am I getting acne?

Tiny hair follicles and pores populate your skin. Within these pores are sebaceous glands that produce sebum, or oil.

Although healthy skin needs some oil, an overproduction of oil traps bacteria in your hair follicles and pores. The trapped bacteria multiply, causing acne lesions. You may develop one of two forms of acne: inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne.

Non-inflammatory acne

Non-inflammatory acne is whiteheads or blackheads. These types of pimples typically aren’t painful and can become unclogged or heal on their own.

Inflammatory acne

Inflammatory acne is generally red, inflamed, and painful pus-filled lesions. This form of acne occurs when your follicles become overly clogged, forcing the walls to burst under pressure, resulting in an inflammatory response by your skin.

How do laser treatments help with acne?

Peach Medical Group offers an FDA-approved laser solution that zaps the acne-causing bacteria deep in your pores. The Lumenis M22 laser works by transmitting an intense light beam into your skin.

The light beam targets the bacteria and clogged pores, triggering a healing response that clears the follicle of inflammation and bacteria. A series of treatments free your skin of 100% of the bacteria causing your acne.

What should I expect during acne treatment?

You wear goggles to shield your eyes from the laser light. The laser treatment feels like tiny rubber bands snapping on your skin.

Your appointment generally lasts 60 minutes. After your session is over, you may notice a sunburn-like feeling and some redness in your treatment area. You should be able to resume all of your usual activities.

Your skin looks more clear, and the texture improves with three to six treatments, although results vary. Your results depend on your skin condition, skin type, and how well you follow the treatment program.
